SpeedTree® 8 for Lumberyard was released today under a free license provided by Amazon to all Lumberyard developers.

Used in hundreds of games and blockbuster films, SpeedTree is the award-winning procedural 3D modeling tool that makes it faster and easier for developers to model complex vegetation.

This launch marks the debut of SpeedTree 8, which has been in development for more than two years and represents a new standard in vegetation modeling. Significant advances include new tools, powerful optimization techniques, refined geometry, and a fully PBR workflow.

“SpeedTree 8 for Lumberyard is designed to be an intuitive and powerful toolset for both new and experienced game devs who want AAA quality vegetation in their Lumberyard projects,” said Michael Sechrest, co-founder at SpeedTree developer IDV. “Taking advantage of Lumberyard’s advanced rendering and lighting systems, teams can create large-scale environmental art faster and with greater fidelity.”

SpeedTree 8 for Lumberyard also marks the debut of a new model library featuring surface-scanned leaf and bark textures. Each new SpeedTree 8 model offers infinite seasonal variations with the new season slider and multiple resolutions

“With Lumberyard, we’re giving developers everything they need to bring their most ambitious visions to life,” said Eric Schenk, General Manager, Amazon Lumberyard. “By seamlessly integrating with Lumberyard, SpeedTree 8 makes it easier to model, import, and customize visually-stunning vegetation in your games.”

In addition to seamless integration, SpeedTree 8 for Lumberyard offers:

  • A free perpetual license for Lumberyard developers
  • Full PBR material workflow and rendering
  • All new 3D surface-scanned PBR texture library
  • New techniques for low-poly branch structure modeling and mesh editing
  • Automatic vertex color painting for Lumberyard wind with in-modeler preview
  • One-draw-call models with tiling textures, wind, and LOD
  • Unlimited seasonal variation
  • New art director tools and more intuitive workflow

This version of SpeedTree is free for Lumberyard developers, and includes updates over the next 12 months. To see the new SpeedTree 8 Modeler in action, and for more information on how to download and activate SpeedTree 8 for Lumberyard, follow the link below:

farcry1-980x551Most games move forward.  The Call of Duty series has taken place in progressively more futuristic settings while Assassins Creed: Syndicate has finally caught up to the industrial revolution. The latest in the Far Cry franchise,  Far Cry Primal, has taken a different and maybe more surprising turn, jumping back twelve thousand years to a not-so-much simpler time and using SpeedTree help to take you there.

The exotic location of each Far Cry game acts as one of the players main antagonists and allies. Whether its the African setting of Far Cry 2 or the fictional civil-war torn Himalayan setting of Far Cry 4 the landscape both provides cover and crafting supplies as well as hiding its own special blend of wildlife waiting for an ambush. For Far Cry Primal, the ancient fictional land of Oros takes these elements to the next level by increasing both the density and animosity of the environment.

Featuring a bespoke language created for the game (There’s no English except in subtitles) and a completely unique environment, Far Cry Primal tries to imagine the pre-civilization world of Oros as fully as possible.  As in Far Cry 4, Assassins Creed Series (Unity and Syndicate) the environment artists at Ubisoft Montreal used the SpeedTree modeler to craft the unique foliage that fills the four biomes that comprise the world, taking advantage of the award winning tools that allow for precise control.  We’re big fans of the Far Cry games and can’t wait to jump into the new world that they’ve created. Although, we’re likely to get distracted looking at trees and get ambushed by some wildlife. But that’s really half the fun. Far Cry Primal is out now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Be sure to follow us on Twitter and keep an eye on our blog for more behind the scenes info on how Far Cry: Primal came to life.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is the second Assassins Creed title to use SpeedTree for Games taking the critically acclaimed combination of conspiracy, parkour, and swords and continuing the fight for freedom on the streets of London. Building on the Assassin’s Creed legacy of recreating architecturally accurate and stunning historical locations, Ubisoft Quebec has brought to life an incredible recreation of a world in the midst of an industrial revolution.

Criss-crossing the dirty underworld and pristine upper class of the period, the game takes you from railyards and factories to vibrant city parks.  Far from portraying London in the desaturated hues that are often used to convey a sense of history, Syndicate’s London feels alive with parks and gardens full of beautiful trees and flowers that serve as a foil to the seedy underbelly of the industrial revolution.

In the past few years, SpeedTree has become a familiar sight to gamers, appearing on the splash screen of some of the biggest cutting-edge AAA title as well as some of the most innovative indie games.  Ubisoft first used SpeedTree for Games for Far Cry 4,  and has since used our modeling tools in a string of blockbuster titles, including Assasins Creed Unity, and the upcoming Tom Clancy’s The Division.  This is a testament not just to the power of our SpeedTree Modeler but to the ever increasing scope of games being produced.  Games are not just bigger than ever, but richer in detail as well.  We look forward to continuing to provide the tools needed to bring amazing games like the Assassins Creed and Far Cry series to life both as fans of the technology and the games themselves.
