SpeedTree® 8 for Lumberyard was released today under a free license provided by Amazon to all Lumberyard developers.

Used in hundreds of games and blockbuster films, SpeedTree is the award-winning procedural 3D modeling tool that makes it faster and easier for developers to model complex vegetation.

This launch marks the debut of SpeedTree 8, which has been in development for more than two years and represents a new standard in vegetation modeling. Significant advances include new tools, powerful optimization techniques, refined geometry, and a fully PBR workflow.

“SpeedTree 8 for Lumberyard is designed to be an intuitive and powerful toolset for both new and experienced game devs who want AAA quality vegetation in their Lumberyard projects,” said Michael Sechrest, co-founder at SpeedTree developer IDV. “Taking advantage of Lumberyard’s advanced rendering and lighting systems, teams can create large-scale environmental art faster and with greater fidelity.”

SpeedTree 8 for Lumberyard also marks the debut of a new model library featuring surface-scanned leaf and bark textures. Each new SpeedTree 8 model offers infinite seasonal variations with the new season slider and multiple resolutions

“With Lumberyard, we’re giving developers everything they need to bring their most ambitious visions to life,” said Eric Schenk, General Manager, Amazon Lumberyard. “By seamlessly integrating with Lumberyard, SpeedTree 8 makes it easier to model, import, and customize visually-stunning vegetation in your games.”

In addition to seamless integration, SpeedTree 8 for Lumberyard offers:

  • A free perpetual license for Lumberyard developers
  • Full PBR material workflow and rendering
  • All new 3D surface-scanned PBR texture library
  • New techniques for low-poly branch structure modeling and mesh editing
  • Automatic vertex color painting for Lumberyard wind with in-modeler preview
  • One-draw-call models with tiling textures, wind, and LOD
  • Unlimited seasonal variation
  • New art director tools and more intuitive workflow

This version of SpeedTree is free for Lumberyard developers, and includes updates over the next 12 months. To see the new SpeedTree 8 Modeler in action, and for more information on how to download and activate SpeedTree 8 for Lumberyard, follow the link below:

THE JUNGLE BOOK

The Jungle book is many things at once.  A remake of the 1967 Disney family classic, it manages to be both original in its expression of an oft-retold tale, an engrossing film on its own, and a technological marvel.  With the environment and almost the entire cast created digitally, The Jungle Book is a huge achievement for VFX and features extensive use of SpeedTree Cinema to bring the jungle to life.

Filmed entirely on blue screen sets, Neel Sethi plays young Mowgli as the only non-digital character in a cast of heavy hitters. Bill Murray, Idris Elba, Scarlett Johansson, Ben Kingsley and more make up the phenomenal cast of animal voices. Directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man, Chef)  The Jungle Book is an astounding feat of technology and cinema. We’re proud that SpeedTree was involved in crafting this vision. Stay tuned for more news on SpeedTree and The Jungle Book!

Congrats to all the amazing VFX work done by the studios involved:

MPC (VFX Supervisor : Adam Valdez)
Weta Digital (VFX Supervisor : Dan Lemmon)

The Production VFX Supervisor is Robert Legato.

Batman-V-Superman-Turkish-Airlines-Super-Bowl-Ads

The long anticipated Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has battled it’s way to a massive international box office opening. Directed by Zach Snyder and featuring a heavyweight cast, including Ben Affleck taking on the mantle of the Dark Knight (to much acclaim). The epic showdown features a massive amount of special effects to painstakingly recreate the intensity and feel of some of DC’s classic graphic novels. With multiple SpeedTree customers working on the VFX, it is perhaps inevitable that  our Academy Award-winning technology found its way onto the streets of Gotham and Metropolis.

Although much of the trailers have showcased dark gritty battles on uninhabited islands (or post-workday downtown centers), the film tactfully counters the concrete and metal urban centers with the more pastoral settings of both Bruce Wayne’s and Clark Kent’s family homes.  Scanline VFX informed us that they had used SpeedTree Cinema while working on the film last year, and it’s great to finally see it hit the big screen.

Despite a less than positive reception from critics, Dawn of Justice is a hit among fans and is on track to break box office records.  Personally, we loved it and highly recommend seeing it on the biggest screen possible (I’m headed to an Imax for a second viewing).

We first featured a screenshot and video from Adam Goodrich over a year ago after some screenshots featuring SpeedTree ended up winning some contests on a few forums. These ended up being early prototypes of Gaia, a tool that would become one of the top sellers on the Unity Asset Store. The latest release features powerful SpeedTree integration for procedural foliage placement. It’s such a good tool that we have added it to our SpeedTree store to ensure that Unity 5 SpeedTree users have access to the best tools for learning and developing .

Gaia acts as a nexus for some of the most popular tools in the Unity community, including Tenkoku Dynamic Sky, Aquas, Distingo terrain shader, and more.  This allows gaia to act as a learning tool for new users to quickly implement their assets using friendly presets.  For the advanced users, the spawners allow you to create a system adapted exactly to your needs.   For SpeedTree, this means that our different packages will have extensions that feature recipes for procedural placement that make sense according to the species.

Gaia is going to be at GDC this year featured both in the Unity booth on the exhibition floor and we’ll be using it to demo SpeedTree in Unity 5, so be sure to stop by and say hi to Adam!

Gaia can be found on our store here, or if you’d prefer, on the Unity Asset Store.
