The smoldering heat of summer didn’t stop these artists from bringing more cool content to the table. Join us for a refreshing look back at our Top 5 of August before barreling into fall!

Zhang Xuan – Pirate radio station

Built by Zhang Xuan and based on concept art by OKU ., this stylized scene boasts a cartoonish touch from the floral foreground to the undulating lines of wind. Tune your foliage to sway gently with a review of games wind on our docs; to create a particle system of falling leaves in UE4, check out this tutorial by Avinash Masih.

Lisa Schertler – Old Garden

Inspired by The Hobbit, Lisa Schertler’s, “Old Garden,” evokes both the comfort of home and the promise of adventure beyond the rolling hills of your backyard. Want to seek horizons beyond modeling trees? Try creating flowers for your garden using Anthony Fylladitis’ method

Christoph Hadner – House in a Swamp

Visualizing a home at the water’s edge, Christopher Hadner’s, “House in a Swamp,” embraces unconventional architecture and incorporates water vegetation. Starting with the ideas behind your world can help organically shape it: take it from concept artist Finnian Macmanus.

Yen-Chen – HangZhou Full CG Environment

Yen-Chen’s render of “Hangzhou,” brings us another waterside structure. A subtle drizzle of rain, powered by Houdini, drives the CGI scene’s water ripples and justifies the delicate motion of the surrounding forest trees. Find even more realistic animation inspiration in Vincent Filhine Tresarrieu’s breakdown of “Road to Buzludzha”.

Mai Al-Arabi – At the bottom of the ocean

This digital matte painting by Mai Al-Arabi takes us to, “The bottom of the ocean,” with exquisite lighting, swaying kelp, and a centerpiece ship nestled among the rock formations. For a closer look at how DMP artists “paint with light,” check out our interview with Marc Zimmerman.

Cherry Laurel
(Cinema)

The dense clusters and bifurcated trunk of our cherry laurel resembles the stylized deciduous trees surrounding Zhang Xuan’s, “Pirate Radio Station”.

Wisteria
(Cinema)

While the picket fence of Lisa Schertler’s, “Old Garden,” is bare, vines like our wisteria add an additional overgrown element to your garden scene.

Fern
(Games)

Ferns tend to thrive in wet and shaded places like those in the shadow of Christoph Hadner’s, “House in a Swamp”.

Tall Fescue Grass
(Cinema)

Though native to Europe, tall fescue grass is commonly found along riverbanks and damp grasslands, like the shoreline grass of Yen-Chen’s, “Hangzhou Full CG Environment”.

Coconut Palm
(Cinema | Games)

While not on-screen, we’d like to imagine the shores near Mai Al-Arabi’s, “At the bottom of the ocean,” are dotted with tropical vegetation like the coconut palm.
