Description
Leatherleaf Mahonia
Mahonia bealei, or the Leatherleaf Mahonia, is a multi-stemmed, clumping, evergreen shrub native to Western China. Its leathery leaves grow in horizontal tiers. Between late winter and early spring, it produces yellow flowers which are followed soon after by waxy, green fruits which mature to an attractive blue-black. The genus Mahonia is so closely related to the genus Berberis that some authorities have begun to lump many Mahonias into Berberis; in a 2009 revision of Manual of Woody Landscape Plants, Michael Dirr declined to eliminate Mahonia as a genus, saying, “I refuse to go there.”
