Description
Hiba Arborvitae Cedar
The Hiba Aborvitae Cedar, but has a number of other names: Thujopsis, False Arborvita, Deerhorn Cedar, and Battleaxe Cedar to start. It is an evergreen conifer in the cypress family and the sole member of the genus Thujopsis dolabrata. It is endemic to Japan, where it is named “asunaro,” a pun meaning “tomorrow it will become,” based on its appearance being similar to a Hinoki Cypress and a saying that roughly equates to, “Tomorrow, it will become a Hinoki Cypress.” It has thick, waxy, lace-patterned leaves with interesting white underbellies. Averaging 90 feet tall in forests, these are also used in landscaping. The wood and leaves have a fragrant aroma.
