1. Aloe Vera (Aloe barbadensis)
The Aloe Vera is a succulent plant with thick, fleshy leaves. The sap found in the leaves is used as a topical treatment for skin conditions. Its large, bright flowers range from yellow to red in color.
2. Bamboo (Bambuseae spp.)
These perennial evergreen plants are the largest members of the grass family. Native to Asia, bamboo is fast growing and can be invasive.
3. Banana Plant (Musa X paradisiaca)
Banana plants are cultivated for their edible fruit. Apart from their majestic hanging flowers and fruit, banana plants are characterized by large flat fronds and peeling skin.
4. Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia reginae)
Also called the Crane Flower, the Bird of Paradise derives its name from the brilliant bird-like flowers its bears.
5. Chinese Fan Palm (Livistona chinensis)
Native to China, this species exhibits a persistant leaf base which forms layers of fibrous dead leaves along its trunk. Other common names include Chusan Palm, Windmill Palm, and Fan Palm Fortune.
6. Coconut Palm (Cocos nucifera)
This large palm (up to 30m tall) is named after the fruit it bears, the coconut. This species is grown for decoration as well as for its culinary uses. Coconut Palms grow in abundance throughout the tropical regions of the world.
7. Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera)
Date Palms are often cultivated for their edible fruit, dates. This species is believed to have originated from northern Africa or the Persian Gulf, where dates have been a staple food source for millenia.
8. Queen Palm (Syagrus romanzoffiana)
Queen Palms are native to and can be found all over South America. The fronds are feathery and die early, resulting in an abundance of pruned frond clippings.
9. Sago Palm (Cycas revoluta)
Sago ‘Palms’ aren’t palms at all but are actually cycads, native to Japan. Sago Palms grow very close to the ground unless very old. This species is the most popular of all cycads because of its pleasing symmetry and large flowers.
